Kitty Bransfield was a Pittsburgh Pirates infielder, and this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection shows him in his National League uniform during his years with the club. Bransfield, who was born in Philadelphia, spent most of his career at first base and was known more for steady defense than for power at the plate. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, made the negatives in the early twentieth century and sold prints to newspapers, so pictures like this one reached readers across the country. The date of about 1907 comes from later research by the Society for American Baseball Research rather than from the negative itself.
