Few of the regiment's officers have been identified by name in this record, but the photograph shows them in the field at Falmouth, Virginia, a town on the Rappahannock River across from Fredericksburg. In the winter of 1862 to 1863, the Union Army of the Potomac camped around Falmouth, and officers from New York regiments like this one spent long months there between major battles. The portrait was made by Mathew Brady, whose studio documented the Civil War for the public, and it offers a glimpse of the men who led volunteer units through that difficult period.
