This portrait shows the officers of the 61st New York Infantry, photographed at Falmouth, Virginia, in April 1863. Falmouth sits on the Rappahannock River across from Fredericksburg, and in the winter and spring of 1863 it was a major camp for the Army of the Potomac. Units often posed their officers in front of the camps during this period, and the photograph captures the army just before the Chancellorsville campaign. The image comes from the Civil War photograph collection made by Mathew Brady's studio, which documented Union officers and camps throughout the war.
