A company of the 164th New York Infantry, photographed as a unit, is what sets this print apart from the many individual soldier portraits in the collection. Mathew Brady, whose Manhattan studio photographed Union officers and enlisted men throughout the war, made the image, which is catalogued as No. B297 in the Civil War Photograph Collection. Units often sat for group portraits like this before leaving for the front, leaving families and comrades a record of men who might not return. The record dates the picture to 1861, when New York regiments were being raised quickly after the war began.
