Photographed at Antietam, Maryland, in September 1862, this image shows men of the 93rd New York Infantry, a regiment raised in New York State and sent to fight in the Army of the Potomac. The battle, fought on September 17, 1862, was the bloodiest single day in American military history, and photographers who followed the armies soon after were among the first to record the aftermath of such fighting for the public. The print is credited to Mathew B. Brady, whose studio sent teams to the battlefield and later showed Antietam views in New York that fall. It is worth noticing how the soldiers were posed and how little of the battle's violence the camera chose to show directly.
