Named for the Massachusetts city, the U.S.S. Boston was a steel protected cruiser from the first generation of ships of the modern U.S. Navy, built in the 1880s. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, photographed American scenery, cities, and ships for sale to the public, so the picture reflects that commercial interest in the navy's new vessels. Cruisers like the Boston were built for speed and scouting rather than for the heavy battle line, and she later served in the Pacific during the Spanish-American War. The date is estimated from the company's 1901 catalog, which places the negative in the years just before that.
