The cruiser *Boston* was one of the first steel warships of the "New Navy," the building program that replaced the Navy's wooden fleet in the 1880s and 1890s. Her name honors the city, which is why she appears in this city-themed gallery. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its wide range of American views, made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative, and its catalog dates the plate to between 1890 and 1901. The negative carries a handwritten note reading "Atlanta 3," which probably refers to the *Atlanta*, the sister cruiser of the same early steel class. The cracked upper left corner shows the plate's age.
