Among the early steel warships of the rebuilt U.S. Navy, the U.S.S. Boston was a protected cruiser that had been designed and built in the 1880s, when the country was first returning to large-scale naval construction. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative, marked with the ship's name, was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American places and vessels. The picture dates to roughly 1890 to 1901, a period when the Boston was active in the Pacific and was later part of the squadron that fought at Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War.
