In 1912, Humboldt County on California's northern coast ran largely on redwood lumber, with sawmills clustered around Humboldt Bay and along the rivers that fed it. Eureka, the county seat, was the commercial center, and its harbor handled the lumber schooners and steamers that carried finished timber south to San Francisco and beyond. Dairy farming in the bottomland valleys and a working fishing fleet added to an economy that still depended heavily on a few extractive industries. Because rail service into the region was limited, water transport carried much of the freight, and local residents tended to measure progress by new mills, churches, and schools. The county's fortunes rose and fell with the lumber trade, which shaped nearly every community along the bay.
