Scotia, on the Eel River in Humboldt County, California, was a company town in 1912, built around the sawmill of the Pacific Lumber Company. The mill turned virgin redwood into lumber, and the town's houses, store, and services depended on the company's payroll and on the steady flow of logs from the surrounding forests. Life followed the mill's shifts, and the company controlled much of daily existence, from housing to the stores where workers bought their goods. For residents of the river valley in 1912, Scotia was known above all as a place where redwood was cut and shipped out of the region.
