Scotia, California, in 1912 was a company town on the Eel River in Humboldt County, built around the Pacific Lumber Company's redwood mill. The company owned most of the town, including the houses, the store, and the mill that sawed old-growth redwood for shipment to markets up and down the coast. Mill whistles set the workday, and families depended on wages paid by the company, so daily life followed the rhythm of the saw and the timber trains that hauled logs in from the surrounding forests. Residents in that period would have known Scotia first as a lumber town, a place where one employer shaped nearly every part of life, from housing to schooling to the shifts a father worked.
