Hollywood in 1912 was a small community on the northwest edge of Los Angeles, annexed to the city only in 1910 after a long dispute over water and liquor. Citrus groves, lemon orchards and bean fields still covered much of the land between the new bungalows, and residents rode Pacific Electric red cars downtown to shop and work. The film business had just arrived. In 1911 the Nestor Film Company opened one of the district's first studios, and other producers soon followed, drawn by sunshine and open lots that let crews shoot outdoors. Townspeople who had voted to keep saloons out now shared their streets with actors, cameramen and carpenters.
