Hollywood in 1929 was a community of roughly 100,000 people folded into the city of Los Angeles, which had annexed it in 1910. The motion picture industry had made the district famous: studios such as Paramount, Warner Bros. and First National operated nearby, and the film colony drew actors, writers and technicians from across the country. The arrival of sound pictures that year, following *The Jazz Singer* in 1927, forced studios to rebuild their stages and retrain their staffs, and the first Academy Awards were presented in May 1929 at a hotel dinner. Oil, citrus and a booming real estate market also shaped the surrounding basin, and the Hollywood Sign, built in 1923 as an advertisement for a housing development, still stood on the hillside above the district.
