Hollywood in 1923 was a small community of orchards, bungalows and studio lots tucked into the hills northwest of Los Angeles, and it had been part of the city of Los Angeles only since 1910. The motion picture business had arrived in earnest after 1911, when film companies found the sunshine, open land and cheap labor attractive, and by the early 1920s studios such as Famous Players-Lasky and the emerging independent lots were turning the district into the center of American film production. The town was also still a place of citrus groves and lemon ranches, and it was growing quickly, with new subdivisions spreading up the slopes of the Cahuenga Pass area. This panoramic view records that transition, with its mix of rural streets, wood-frame houses and the first signs of a city built around the movies.
