Humboldt County in 1915 ran on redwood. Sawmills and lumber shipping drove the economy around Humboldt Bay, and schooners and steamers carried lumber from Eureka to markets along the Pacific coast. The Northwestern Pacific Railroad had only recently connected Eureka with the rest of the state, which gave lumber and dairy producers a more reliable route to San Francisco than the coastal steamers had offered. Dairy farms in the river bottoms and fishing and canneries on the bay added to the local economy. Residents of Eureka and Arcata would have known the county first as a lumber and shipping center rising out of the redwood forests of the north coast.
