Mills College in Oakland, California, in 1915 was a women's college with a long history on the East Bay. The school had begun in 1852 as the Seminary of the Pacific in Benicia, and after moving to Oakland in 1871 it grew into one of the best-known women's colleges in the West. Oakland itself was a growing city of wharves, rail yards, and factories along the bay, tied to San Francisco by ferry and by the Southern Pacific. That same year, San Francisco hosted the Panama-Pacific International Exposition across the water, which drew national attention to the Bay Area. For the students and faculty on the leafy campus, the wider world seemed close, even as their daily life centered on classes, chapel, and the college's gardens and buildings.
