Looking up into the Capitol dome, this view shows the structural framework rather than the painted decoration that draws most visitors' eyes. The dome's interior is built of cast iron, and its ribs, braces, and supports were designed in the 1850s and 1860s to carry the weight of the heavy outer shell. The photograph was made around 1920 by the National Photo Company, a Washington commercial firm that documented the city's public buildings and monuments in the early twentieth century.
