The east front of the Capitol is the side that faces the Supreme Court and the Library of Congress, and this view zeroes in on the dome rising above that facade. The Capitol dome as seen today was finished during the Civil War, when Thomas U. Walter's cast-iron design replaced the earlier, lower dome, and its crowning statue of Freedom was raised in 1863. By the time this photograph was made, between 1880 and 1910, the building had become the country's most recognizable civic symbol, and the dome was a familiar sight across the city. Look closely at the detail of the upper drum and ironwork, which shows the engineering that let such a heavy structure stand.
