The east front of the U.S. Capitol is the side that faces the Supreme Court and the Library of Congress across the grounds, and it is the approach most visitors saw first when arriving by carriage or on foot in the early twentieth century. This view takes in the broad lawn on the southeast side, where the building's east elevation rises above the terraces and the landscaped grounds designed in the nineteenth century. Dating from about 1920, the print captures the Capitol as it looked before later expansions and the 1960s extension of the grounds reshaped the surroundings. Because the caption card is unverified, the exact photographer and date remain uncertain, but the image still records the setting in the years after World War I.
