This photograph shows bronze doors meant for the House wing of the U.S. Capitol, which were later moved to the building's central east front entrance. The subjects listed for the print point to the Christopher Columbus theme and to maquettes, or small preliminary models, that the sculptor used before the full-scale doors were cast. The print comes from the album of Benjamin Brown French, who oversaw the Capitol's construction and grounds as Commissioner of Public Buildings in the 1850s. Photographs like this one record the Capitol's decoration during a period of major expansion, when Congress was adding sculpture and ornament to the building.
