The photograph shows the east pediment of the Capitol's north wing, the section that housed the Senate, at a time when Washington was still finishing and expanding the building. Benjamin Brown French, who served as commissioner of public buildings in the 1850s and 1860s, oversaw much of that work and kept an album of photographs documenting it. The print is a salted paper process, an early method that produced soft, warm-brown images and that was widely used in the years before the Civil War. Its survival in French's album makes it a useful record of the Capitol's architecture during one of its most active building periods.
