The Capitol's north wing and its south side were the focus of a major expansion in the 1850s, when Congress approved enlarging the building to house a growing government. This photograph shows the piping laid for that work, a detail that sits in the background of the grander views of the building and tells a quieter story about the construction. Pipes of this kind carried water and heating or drainage lines that a building of this scale required. The date is given as sometime between about 1852 and 1860, and the caption card that supplied it has not been verified, so the exact moment is best read as a range. The print comes from the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division.
