Rather than a finished building detail, this salted paper print records a set of bronze doors meant for the east portico of the Senate wing of the U.S. Capitol, a project from the years just before the Civil War. The album it belongs to was assembled by Benjamin Brown French, who served as Commissioner of Public Buildings and oversaw much of the Capitol's expansion at the time. The record also lists maquettes and Revolutionary War battles among its subjects, suggesting the doors were meant to honor George Washington and the nation's founding, and that the photograph may show a preliminary model. Salted paper prints like this one were an early and fairly fragile process, which makes the surviving image valuable to historians of the building.
