Bronze panels and medallions from the east portico doors of the Senate wing are the focus here, and the record notes that the scenes carried on them include Revolutionary War campaigns and battles. The photograph comes from an album kept by Benjamin Brown French, who served as Commissioner of Public Buildings and oversaw much of the Capitol's extension in the years before and during the Civil War. The doors were part of the effort to finish and decorate the expanded building. Close views like this one show the modeling of individual figures and reliefs that is hard to make out from the ground.
