Chief Justice Earl Warren stands before the crowd on the East Portico of the U.S. Capitol as he swears in Richard M. Nixon on January 20, 1969, the day Nixon took office as the 37th president. Pat Nixon stands nearby, and the photograph catches the formality of the moment in the Capitol's ceremonial space. Presidential inaugurations on the East Front drew large crowds throughout the 1960s, and this color print preserves how the scene looked during that decade, when many official photographs were still in black and white.
