This watercolor and pencil drawing shows the east front of the Capitol, the side that faced the growing city and its approach from the east. The building had been burned by British troops in 1814 and was rebuilt over the following decade, with Charles Bulfinch completing the central section and dome in the mid-1820s. The drawing dates to about 1828, so it captures the Capitol just after its restoration, when the nation was still defining what its federal seat would look like. It is part of the John Rubens Smith Collection, and Smith, an English-born artist working in Philadelphia and Washington, made many careful architectural views of the period.
