This photograph reproduces Charles Burton's 1824 painting of the Marquis de Lafayette's visit to the United States Capitol, a scene that records one of the most celebrated stops on his tour of the country. Lafayette, the French general who had served in the American Revolution, returned to the United States in 1824 and 1825 as an honored guest, and Congress and the public welcomed him with great ceremony. Burton's canvas, now held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, shows the Capitol as it looked in the early republic. This print comes from the National Photo Company collection, which made many reproductions of American paintings and buildings in the early twentieth century, so it preserves both the painting and the era's interest in national memory.
