Published in Harper's magazine in 1901, this watercolor shows the Capitol at a time when its cast-iron dome, completed in 1866, had already become the building's most recognizable feature. The cornerstone was laid in 1793 in the presence of George Washington, and the structure grew over the following decades into the seat of Congress. By the turn of the century, the Capitol was a standard subject for illustrated national magazines, where its white walls and dome often stood for the country as a whole.
