The Capitol's cast-iron dome had been finished only a few years when Currier & Ives issued this hand-colored lithograph from its Nassau Street office in New York, sometime between 1872 and 1874. The firm sold views like this to a broad middle-class market that wanted images of the nation's landmarks, and the color was applied by hand, often by workers using stencils to tint each impression. The building was still a work in progress in these years, with its extended wings under construction, so the print shows a structure that was both a symbol of the Union and an ongoing project.
