A close view of part of the U.S. Capitol, titled "Detail of Progress," suggests a focus on the building's ongoing construction rather than its finished exterior. The Capitol was built and rebuilt across most of the nineteenth century: the British burned it in 1814, and the cast-iron dome was not completed until 1866. The record does not say which section is shown, but photographs of its stone and ironwork from this period capture a national building still taking shape.
