The U.S. Capitol has stood on Capitol Hill since the federal government moved to Washington in 1800, and this etching captures it in the early republic, when the building was still a work in progress with its wings and dome taking shape over many decades. Engravings and etchings like this one circulated widely in the 19th century, carrying the image of the national legislature to readers who would never see it in person. Look closely at the architectural lines and the surrounding landscape, which show how sparse the young capital's grounds were compared with the dense city that grew up around the building later.
