Among the Capitol drawings in Benjamin Henry Latrobe's archive, this sheet shows an allegorical figure designed as architectural sculpture rather than a building plan. Latrobe served as surveyor of the public buildings and worked on the unfinished Capitol during the years between 1803 and 1814, a period when the building's interiors and ornament were still being decided. The layered graphite, ink, and watercolor wash suggest a design meant for careful study by builders and carvers. It is worth noticing how Latrobe drew on classical allegory to express national themes, an approach that shaped much of the Capitol's sculptural program.
