Taken from the Capitol and looking southeast, this view shows a part of the city that is less often photographed: the Washington Navy Yard along the Anacostia River and the Ebenezer United Methodist Church nearby. Around 1863 the capital was crowded with troops, government clerks and wartime construction, and the Navy Yard was a working center for naval ordnance and shipbuilding. The albumen print, made on paper coated with egg white, was the standard photographic process of the period and gives the scene a fine, detailed surface.
