Drawn from the southeast of the Capitol and looking northwest, this watercolor offers an unusual angle on the building, and its subject list also names stables, which points to the working life around the grounds. The years between about 1846 and 1855 were a time of expansion, as Congress extended the Capitol with new wings, so the view captures a national landmark still in the middle of change. The title was devised by Library staff, and the artist is only possibly Augustus Kollner, a German-born lithographer known for city views, so that attribution should be read with caution. Watercolor and gouache give the scene soft color and make it a useful record of the streetscape as well as the building.
