Rather than the building's full façade, this view is titled as a detail of progress, a close look at one part of the Capitol while it was still changing. The expansion of the Capitol and the construction of its cast-iron dome ran through the 1850s and 1860s, when Congress needed more space as the country grew. The work continued through the Civil War, and the Statue of Freedom was hoisted to the top of the dome in 1863. Photographs like this one record how the building took shape, so they reward a careful look at the construction work itself.
