This salted paper print shows a cross-section through the dome of the U.S. Capitol, a view that exposes the structure beneath the familiar exterior. It comes from an album assembled by Benjamin Brown French, who served as Commissioner of Public Buildings and oversaw much of the Capitol's expansion. The cast-iron dome was built between 1856 and 1866, and the image dates from the same period, when the building was being transformed by new construction. Salted paper prints were a common early photographic process, and the picture offers a record of how engineers and officials studied the dome's engineering while it was going up.
