The cast-iron ribs of the Capitol's dome, rising in sections above the building's roof, are the focus here, specifically the third section of the cupola framework. The dome was rebuilt in the early 1850s, when Thomas U. Walter's design replaced the older wooden dome with an iron structure that could carry the heavier crowning statue planned for the top. Photographs like this one, taken during construction between about 1852 and 1860, record a rare view of that metal skeleton before it was clad and finished. The caption card that accompanied the print is unverified, so the exact date and photographer remain uncertain.
