This picture shows a section of the tholus, the domed part of the Capitol, which the caption card identifies as the dome. The date is an estimate, but it places the photograph in the years when Congress replaced the smaller 1820s dome with the cast-iron structure designed under architect Thomas U. Walter, work that began in the mid-1850s. Because the record is unverified, the exact view and the purpose of the photograph are uncertain. The image still offers a rare look at the dome's construction, when its iron framework was taking shape above the building.
