The cornice details on the second story of the dome set this view apart from the broader exterior shots of the Capitol. The dome was then in transition: Charles Bulfinch's earlier wooden dome was being replaced by a larger cast-iron structure designed under architect Thomas U. Walter, work that began in the mid-1850s. Because the caption card's date is unverified and the range runs from about 1852 to 1860, the photograph likely captures the building during the years of this rebuilding. Close views like this one show the ornamental metalwork and the scale of the new construction.
