The room shown is the House of Representatives chamber in the south wing of the U.S. Capitol, where members debated and voted on national legislation. The House moved into this hall in 1857, after its earlier chamber, which British troops had set on fire in 1814 during the War of 1812, was no longer in use. The semicircular rows of desks facing a raised rostrum reflect the mid-nineteenth-century design of the building. The record gives no date for this print, so it is best read as a view of the room rather than a record of one particular session.
