Few Federal Art Project posters from Chicago announce student work as plainly as this one, which advertises an exhibition of pupils' art. Silkscreen was a method the WPA poster units relied on because small shops could print bold, flat color in inexpensive editions. The Federal Art Project employed artists during the Depression and ran community art instruction and exhibitions, and posters like this one helped draw local audiences to them. A date stamp on the back reads June 1939, three years after the 1936 design date, so the sheet was still circulating in an office well after it was first printed.
