This 1940 silkscreen poster was produced under the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project to promote an exhibition and adult art classes at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Its sponsors list reads like a map of the city's arts education effort: the Art Teaching Division of the New York City Art Project worked alongside the Board of Education's Adult Education Program. The Federal Art Project employed artists during the Depression, and its poster shops turned out bright, inexpensive announcements for museum shows, classes and community events. Posters like this one carried art education into neighborhoods that rarely visited the museum.
