The most distinctive thing about this poster is its subject: an exhibition of children's art in Chicago, promoted under the Federal Art Project, the arm of the Works Progress Administration that employed artists during the Great Depression. The silkscreen color print dates to 1936, and its verso carries a later stamp, February 16, 1940, the kind of marking left when a poster passed through a government or library office. Works like this were meant to draw crowds to free or low-cost community exhibitions, and posters of the period often show how the WPA used the medium of silkscreen to produce affordable, eye-catching public notices.
