This silkscreen poster announces an exhibition of art made by children, and its subject line places the show in Chicago during the 1930s. It was produced under the Federal Art Project, the arm of the Works Progress Administration (later renamed the Work Projects Administration in 1939) that employed artists during the Great Depression and turned out posters for civic events, museums and community programs. Silkscreen was a method the project's printmakers developed into a cheap, durable way to reproduce bold graphic designs in large runs. Posters like this one show how public agencies used the medium to bring children's creativity before wide audiences.
