A silkscreen poster announcing an exhibition of housing photographs, produced under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration in 1936. The Federal Art Project was one of the New Deal programs that put artists to work during the Great Depression, and its poster shops produced announcements for exhibitions, concerts, and public events across the country. Housing was a pressing public concern in New York at the time, when many families lived in crowded tenements, so an exhibition focused on residential conditions spoke directly to the issues of the day. The poster's date stamp on the back, August 26, 1939, shows it was still circulating in the archive's records years after it was printed.
