This aerial view shows a Mitsubishi oil refinery in Japan as it looked before it was bombed in 1945. Japan depended heavily on imported crude and had little domestic supply, so by the final year of the war refineries and fuel facilities were priority targets for the U.S. Army Air Forces. Photographs like this one were gathered into target albums, such as the *Precision targets* volume this print comes from, to give planners and crews a detailed view of a site's layout and surroundings before a raid. The image preserves how the facility looked before it was struck.
