Tachikawa Air Depot, a Japanese Army facility west of Tokyo that repaired and supplied aircraft, is the subject of this 1945 aerial view taken during the bombing of the site. American bombers struck Tachikawa and other Japanese aviation installations in the final months of the Pacific War, when Allied planners were working to cripple Japan's ability to fight in the air. The print comes from an album titled *Precision targets*, a collection of target and damage photographs that analysts used to judge bombing results, so it reflects both the wartime purpose of aerial reconnaissance and the destruction it recorded.
