Few installations in the Tokyo region were as central to Japan's wartime aviation as the Tachikawa Air Depot, the army facility in Tachikawa, on the western edge of the capital, that handled aircraft repair and supply. This 1945 aerial view shows the depot before it was bombed, and it comes from an album titled *Precision Targets*, a set of images assembled so that planners could study runways, buildings and layouts before attacking. Such pictures were taken by reconnaissance aircraft and used to plan the raids American bombers carried out over Japan in the final months of the war. The arrangement of hangars and workshops across the grounds shows the scale of the depot's operations.
