This aerial view shows the Nakajima Aircraft Company's Musashino plant in Musashino, on the outskirts of Tokyo, photographed in 1945 before it was bombed. Nakajima was among Japan's largest aircraft makers, and its factories built engines and airframes for the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy. The picture comes from an album of "precision targets" compiled by American forces, which catalogued industrial sites for the strategic bombing campaign against Japan's aircraft production in the final year of the war. Such images were used to plan raids, so the layout of buildings, rail lines and open ground was recorded for targeting as much as for documentation.
