The picture shows the bombing of the Tachikawa Aircraft Company plant in Tachikawa, a city on the western edge of Tokyo. In 1945, American bombers repeatedly struck Japanese aircraft factories during the final air campaign against the home islands, and Tachikawa was among the sites hit. The print comes from an album titled *Precision targets*, which appears to have been compiled to judge how accurately bombs fell on their intended aims. The aerial vantage lets viewers trace the layout of the works and the pattern of damage across the grounds.
